Dunstanburgh Castle

History

Dunstanburgh Castle is a 14th-century fortification on the coast of Northumberland in northern England, between the villages of Craster and Embleton. The castle was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster between
1313 and 1322, taking advantage of the site's natural defences and the existing earthworks of an Iron Age fort.

Scope of Works

To design, supply and install a new renewable, sustainable energy efficient off grid power system for the visitor shop (replacing the existing 2015 diesel generator running 24/7). The new system needed containing & Installing within the existing compound to meet with English Heritage SMC requirements. Load profiling was taken to size Solar PV panels, battery storage and emergency generator back-up. All units, control, cable and containment were designed to withstand the harsh coastal weather and corrosion frequent for the area.


Significant planning and logistics were needed to deliver , transport and position all units from Craster fishing village to Castle, across one mile of off-road headland that required multiple trips, skilful plant handling and public and staff protection.

Supply and Install Waterless toilets providing environmentally friendly facilities to this remote area void of any underground drainage facilities. The latter has solar PV lighting and are of robust light weight construction.
