The project aimed to clean up marine plastic pollution on the island of Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean. In 1995 David Attenborough described Aldabra as one of the world’s greatest surviving nature treasures under threat from increasing marine plastic pollution.
In March 2019 six post graduate students from Oxford University co-led an expedition to clear marine debris from the shores of the atoll and transport to the island of Mahe for proper processing. |
The team have now returned, having cleaned-up the atoll, collecting 25 tonnes of marine debris containing 50,000 flip flops! The data and valuable information collected will be used in education and ongoing conservation research. Please click here for more information: https://www.queens.ox.ac.uk/aldabra |
